|  New 30g Set-up and Filter I just got a used 30g rectangular tank from a friend with a stand and everything, and I just moved it to my house last night. Now, I am familiar with tanks with the regular filters and everything, but this one came with a cylinder filter that I'm not really sure how it works or how to maintain it. The cylinder gets filled with half charcoal and half cotton, and goes underneath the stand, and two tubes go from the filter up to what looks like a powerhead, and an intake tube that goes over the side into the tank also. Is there any special maintenance for this type of filter? And what are some ideas for this tank once I get it filtered and cycled? Also, I am considering sand, but I don't know if that would be a good idea for a 30 gallon, since it wouldn't have an underground filter with sand.

|  You have what is called a Canister filter. Does it have a label on it? I would suggest that instead of filling with cotton and charcoal that you look into making (if premade aren't available) your own filter discs. Like this: Eheim Ecco Filter Pad 3 Pcs. (Blue) at Big Al's Online Use a couple layers of this, and then top (or bottom) with a bio-media: Eheim Ehfilav 5 Liter at Big Al's Online Carbon is really only needed if you are trying to remove chemicals from your water. Other then that it doesn't do anything. Other then normal cleaning/replacing the filter media there isn't anything that you need to do special with this filter. Sand would be fine. You don't need a UGF to use sand.

| I know I don't "need" a UGF for sand. I meant would it be wise to not have one in a larger tank like this? Wouldn't there be a lot of accumulation at the bottom of the tank under the sand? And there are no labels on the filter. THe ones that were there seem to have been worn off. :-\

| Take a look at Big Al's and see if there are any filters that look like yours. Also, under the lid there may be something engraved that could help identify the make. A UGF is completely unneeded in any aquarium if you have another type of filter. Also, sand will pack really densely once wet. Any gunk will just sit on top of the sand, and not settle into cracks that normally appear with gravel. So... there's not going to be any accumulation under the sand.
