Default questions on shrimp tanks

well, first off, that other thread about the guys 20 gallon shrimp tank has really gotten me interested in it, and all my fish in my 20 gallon just died, so i think i may give it a shot.

firstly, do shrimp require any sort of special lighting or a CO2 setup or anything like that?

i think that they prefer a planted tank, but will they do ok in a fake plastic tank?

anyway, would like any advice or suggestionsyall might have, thanks as always

They do not require special lighting or C02, and can do fine in a tank with plastic plants. Depending on your lighting, you could probably keep low light plants like java fern & java moss, and the shrimp would definitely benefit although it isn't necessary. It just provides a nice place for the babies to hide, and the shrimp like to pick at the plants.

ive come to the conclusion that it must have been ick.

correct me if im wrong, but if the parasite doesnt have anything to feed on (i.e. fish) then it will clear up in a few weeks, right?

Woo, I've inspired someone.

They're not too picky. They love moss though. Most of the shrimp I've currently got in the 10 gallon, waiting to go into the 20 love hanging out in the moss.

They don't actually eat the plants, they just pick at any food that may have gotten stuck in the plants. You definitely have to feed them every day, and a nice assortment usually works best. They love veggies like cucumbers and squash, as well as crab & lobster bites.

well thats good to know. i talked to my LFS owner today and he said they get cherry shrimp and other types from time time when his distributer puts them on sale, so i'll just have to keep my eyes out.

he also said he'll sale them for 3 or 4 dollars a peice depending on the species, is that a pretty good price??
