Yes, bypassing the water softener might be a good idea for the long term health of the fish.

As for the high PH, that's not really that big of a deal, and not that high. Like has already been said, a majority of fish will adjust just fine. My bigger worry with using well water would be any metals or sulfer in the water.

Why is water softener not good for long term health of fish. I know my well water would probably do my fish in with its hardness and nitrate.

The only thing I can thinnk of, and I am not sure is the salt that the softener uses to clean the media in the softener tank.
Other then that, I thought the softener would be a help to the fish tank. There is no chlorine or anything to treat the water!
The only thing that confuses me is that the ph level is lower before the softener. I took two tests. One at the well, which showed 7.4 ph. The other test was at the faucet that shows 8.2 on ph. I just don't understand why there is such a huge difference.

I don't know either elderberry99. my ph is apx 8.2 as well but i don't remember what it was out of the tap. i will have to test again when i get more supplies. i've also been told that salt is good for the fishes well being. it is supposed to help with electrolites. most of my info comes from a fish guy that has been breeding and keeping fish for over 25 yrs and has had a lot of vet schooling.

You should measure the pH from the faucet after it has sat out for 24 hours. Aeration may be causing the pH to change.

From what I understand, the water softener replaces carbonate ions with sodium ions (from the salt). There's a short explanation here: HowStuffWorks "How does a water softener work?"

There's something about using softened water with fish here: Freshwater Aquarium: water, sodium ions, calcium ions I couldn't find anything more scientific about using it.

thank you Lotus..... i guess in some ways its all about water stability. i guess i will have to do some testing on my water straight from the well and see what is what. then compare my results to water softener water. i think i could probably use a few more fish in my 110 gal also to help with aggression. i have a little of that going on too. my OB mbuna has gotten a little bigger and now it thinks it is its turn to be boss. hahaha

Lotus,
I had to remove the aerator off the sink when I hooked up the fill line for the aquarium. There is no aeration at all there at that point.
