| Calculating aquarium power costs I was wondering if anyone has ever calculated how much in electricity costs their aquarium generates per month or year? Is there a formula for this? Just wondering how one would figure that out. |

| Oh, hmmmm, ya know. That is something I didn't want to think about. One of those hidden costs to the hobby, and with all money spent elsewhere, out of sight, out of mind. Now, though, you have got me wondering about it myself.

| It really depends on the equipment. I use compact fluorescent bulbs and that has cut down on the electric since I have a lot of planted nano tanks. Here is a site that tells you how to calculate it Algone.com - Aquarium Power Consumption |

| I have a solar cell that I may hook up to a tank light. I looked at that link, and my 45 watt light costs me about 2$ US a month running half the day.

| I'm always thinking about that. Heres a link to a tank electrical calculater. This thing comes in handy. tank calculater
Some people who have saltwater reefs rack up hundreds of dollars a month! I bet they relly don't want to hear that.

| some things are better left unknown... I'd be afraid, but this house has a total of seven aquariums and is about to have an eighth. Only three of them are mine, but I bet they use more electricity than any of the others... the important part is the fish are happy right...

| I never worry about it. All hobbies require money for various expenses. I could be blowing that money on stuff I don't need. I would rather spend my money on my tanks than waste $50 a week on cigarettes or something else. |

| The other day, i calculated how much it the electicity costs to run my 35gal tank, and it came out to be about £100 a year which is like $200, and thats without the lights being on most of the time. Im pretty sure i calcutated it right, but im not sure because i still cant believe it costs that much just for 1 tank (maybe its just me that thinks thats alot?)..... The electricity costs are probably different in the US than the UK though. Algone.com - Aquarium Power Consumption
