I think you made a good choice getting rid of the goldies. Not that I dislike them but you'll have so many more stocking options with tropicals.

Good choice about the Goldfish, you will love your tank so much without them.

Here is what I'm probably going to do.

add one more filter (probably a whisper 20i)
Add a heater

various lowlight plants

1 female betta
1 honey gourami
2 albino cory cats
about 6 cherry shrimp

your beta and gourami would probably make meals of your shrimp.
