Default 10 gallon plans

My two neons with ntd appear to be on their last leg. One of them barely have any color at all. I'm trying to decide if it's time to euthanize. That's a hard decision to make....

Anyway, I've been trying to decide what to do with the tank once the neons are gone. I've got two plans. Not sure it they'll work though. I need advice, votes, ideas, etc...

1) Puffer only tank. What about figure 8's? Or dwarf puffers? I know green spotted would get too big. Also, IDK how many I could put in there.

2) Male betta with ghost shrimp and 2 african dwarf frogs. My daughter asks for a betta every time she goes fish shopping with me. I think this tank would really appeal to her.

I'd go for the second one, but without the shrimp. Bettas often eat shrimp.

roark fishies, I've got some info for you.

#1) If you do puffers, figure 8's may be the best bet. They seem to do better in a FW environment. LFS sell puffers as FW fish (most do), however some are brackish fish that will need a semi/salt environment when older.

This could pose a problem. They also have a VERY DEMANDING & specific feeding requirements. They will not eat flake or dried foods. Instead they need to be fed live or frozen foods such as snails, shrimp, worms, daphnia, clams, and oysters.

#2) Lotus is correct, betta's will eat shrimp, if not right away, then right after a molt, when they are nice, juicy and vulnerable for eating.

Housing a betta with a couple african dwarf frogs should be OK. Hopefully, the betta is temperament is a bit milder than some. Make sure they are the ADF, and not the clawed variety that get big and eat everything.

ADF depend on smell for their food mostly, their eyesight is not great. If fed too many sinking pellets that aren't eaten, you may have to remove them before they foul the water.

So if your daughter would like a betta, I'd try a betta. They are relatively inexpensive, quite showy, without the big crazy feeding requirements that puffers have.

I know your delema.. I have my daughter's 12g nanocube FW planted tank empty again.. and I'm just itchin' to make it a "Something" tank.. just need to find that "SPECIAL SOMETHING"..

OH the possibilities......

My bettas <3 their 10G home. I have two living together merrily (though sadly my male seems to have hit 'old age' and I fear is not terribly long for the world) )

While I know you'd probably like to avoid neons again, there's plenty of small schooling fish that make excellent tank mates for bettas too.

Personally I found the dwarf frogs to be frusterating and boring as heck. Also shockingly diffecult to keep alive.

Wow. Are bettas really aggressive enough to eat a shrimp? I wouldn't have thought that. I've owned a betta before but it was years ago in a glass vase with a plant. Remember when those were popular? poor betta. So I don't have experience putting bettas with other fish. Not that I would enjoy it, but wouldn't the shrimp be a good stimulation for the betta. You know, hunting and eating live food?

The puffers and frogs sound like a lot of work. Tab, what did you find frustrating about the frogs?

Um this is kinda misleading.
F8 puffers need brackish water. Id shoot for a trio of DPs instead of the F8s.
Its pretty much a 50/50 chance with bettas and Shrimp. In my exp. Bettas may be purdy but the pretty BORRING.
Shrimp pellets aren't a good choice of food for ADFS. They could still hard and they can cause bloating. Feed them Blood Worm.

For once I would actually have to agree with Bob on this one...
