| New 29g tank, Barbs or cichlids? I just picked up a 29 gallon tank and I have it cycling right now. When the cycle is complete I plan on stocking it with fish from the same region. My 55 gallon is moving towards a south american biotope with tetras and silver dollars (the rasboras are moving). I was considering barbs or cichlids.
If I go for barbs, I was considering a school of tigers and a scool of rosey barbs. These don't get too big. I do have some concerns with agression. Also, if I were to go with tigers, would the green tigers count as members of a school of regular tigers, or would they be their own school?
If I go with cichlids, are there any things that I should do with my water? The water here is VERY hard right from the tap. When I test it, it's always over 200 ppm. It is also alkaline, reading above 7.8 most of the time. And thirdly, I know they are territorial. So, how many could I put in a tank this small?

| This is the fun part trying to figure out what to get lol. The barbs should be fine together as long as there in a school. As for cichlids, if you want them you will need to get some water softener. You could go with dwarf cichlids like Rams, Apistos, or Kribs. If you went with one of the dwarf cichlids you should get a male and female. good luck

| Hmmm...Barbs are always fun to watch...but cichlids are interesting and colorful.

| I was thinking Africans due to my hard water. I am amazed at how well my Tetras do with the hard water here. I have tried not to dose the water with stuff because it makes the water chemistry bounce around and I think that is more stressful to the fish than the less than optimum water conditions.
If I do go with Africans, any suggestions? I have regular gravel on the bottom of the tank. I can move in some rock and other "caves" for them. And if I do, would it be wrong to put plants in the tank?

| Africans will be nice but something to consider is the shape of the tank. Some of your Africans will be too big for a 29G tank and those that aren't stick towards the bottom of the tank. So if its activity and movement in the tank that you are looking for then Id go with Barbs. I would go with some Rosey (but only a few maybe like 1m/2f) some Tigers (and yes greens are apart of the same school) and maybe even some Cherry Barbs or Gold Barbs too. Just remember it is only a 29G tank so keep your numbers in check. On the other hand if you are looking for an 'oddity' or something you've never kept I would go with Shell Dwellers or something along those lines.

| Shell dwellers would be great. You could also do a species of smaller neolamprologus, but it would more than likely have to be a species only tank due to aggression. The dwarf julies would go with some shell dwellers as would some cavlus or compressips. Lol, I would have LOVED to have had water that hard out of the tap when I was heavy into Tangs.

| The crux of my dilemma is just that, do I go for colorful fish that just sit there, or more common fish that are active. I have an active tank already in the 55g tank.
Shell dwellers are not something I had considered. I will have to do some research.

| I'm going by the LFS today. I will see what they have, can get, and what their opinions are on water quality/fish species/tank size. The place I'm going to is really good, but they don't have the widest selection in stock. That's not a problem as I'm early in the cycle and have plenty of time before the tank will be ready to add fish.
One question though. I noticed looking at the fish profiles that most of the shell dwellers prefer a sandy bottom. I have pea sized gravel in the bottom of the tank. How big of a problem is that? Can I simply add a thin layer of sand, or would I need to remove the gravel and replace it with sand?
