| Water Hardness. hi all. i have never checked or thought about my water hardness but with the fish in my sig what would be the best water hardness. im thinking of getting a test kit for it. my water is very alkaline at 9.0ph but i have used interpet easy adjust ph down so it is now 7.5. another dose tomorrow for 7.0
i think that with alkaline water comes hard water. is there a way to make water softer...?
Thanks.
Dan.

| This is a nice article about hardness/pH/KH: Aquarium Chemistry, pH, gH, and kH relationship
I think the safest way to reduce all three is to use RO (reverse osmosis) for some of your water. |

| ok then. i read it. so to make the water better for my bristlenoses and breeding i need to add peat moss and if needed add some baking powder (to make water more risistant to ph change). and for plant growth i need to stop my airstones... ok right. i'll get the test kits and then sort that out.
it the above right?
Thanks.

| You'll really need to be testing your GH, KH and pH to know. Most of the time, it's the hardness (not the pH) that really affects egg hatching. Personally, I'd go for RO water, as it's easier to control than peat moss, etc. I doubt you'll need to add baking soda, but test your KH to find out.
Some driftwood (bogwood) in the tank may also soften the water somewhat, and it's essential for BN plecos. |

| ok thanks. i have 2 big pieces of driftwood in there. is peat moss difficult to keep contained or is it difficult in another way? my plants seem to be doing better with the airstones turned down. i shall get the test kits as soon as...
Thanks.

| You should put the peat moss in a fine meshed media bag or a cut-off piece of tights (or pop socks, etc.) to keep it in one place. Most people put the bag in their filter. It can get messy, and it will start to break apart over time. |

| Definently need a test kit. Changing pH isn't the best option so knowing how much you are changing it is needed. To big of swings can stress/kill the fish. Stable is the key, though at 9, yes you should lower it some. I'd recommend RO too, that way you know whats in the water.
