| Pea gravel question Is there any reason to avoid home improvement store pea gravel as a substrate?
Why would purchasing aquarium gravel be the better choice? |

| I don't see why not? We buy their playsand...gravel is just rocks so..? As long as its not coated in anything or there is nothing on the label that would make you question the health of your tank i say go for it.

| I've even used pea gravel from the gravel pit. I think it was only $1 something for a 5gal bucket. Not to mention the natural look it adds to the tank. Just clean it really well.

| There's nothing wrong with using cheap gravel. I would encourage you to use some mulm (bacteria) from another tank and a bit of peat (food for previously mentioned bacteria) sprinkled on the bottom to help speed the bacterial processes.

| Are you talking about just getting some regular peat moss from the garden area at Home Depot or Walmart?
I have never used peat in a tank, but I may do that with my new one.

| You can use that, just make sure to get some that doesn't have any additives. Use the ground up stuff at the bottom of the bag (or mash it up yourself). It doesn't take much--just a thin layer. Too much will cause problems in the long run.

| I bought a bag at Home depot for $2.49 about a month ago to add to my 55g. I rinsed it 3 times before I thought it was clean enough to go in the tank. But considering it was about 40 pounds for less than $3, I'm really happy with it.
Unless you're going for a specific color, I'd say it's the only way to go for a natural look.
