Default Sand Question

I am going to be switching out my gravel, and putting in sand. I know that doing this could give me a mini cycle, but that's not the point.

I was wondering if it would be safe if I got sand from my local beach, or up at a sand pit that my dad found, which is up in the mountains.

I would boil not once, but three times, and wash it out after each time, to make sure that it would safe.

It would be less of a pain if you just bought some at Home Depot
And it does not cost that much either.

I got a bag of play sand recently, 55LBs for under $5.00.

Where ever you get your sand though RINSE IT. And when you think you're done rinsing it, RINSE IT SOME MORE.

I rinsed mine till I thought ALL The dust was gone and it still took several days for the tank to settle.

Agreed with the rest. Its easier to just go spend $3-5 at Lowe's or HD and get a 50+ lb bag of playsand. The stuff works and looks good.

i agree on the playsand, but if you do go with "wild" sand, i would rinse and bake. never heard of boiling sand, but i do know you can bake it to kill anything in there.

You can also avoid your cycle by putting your gravel in a nylon sock and dropping it in the tank. (make sure it stays wet the whole time in non chlorinated water!) Then take it out after about a week.

Also don't change your filter media for at least 2 weeks on either side of the change over.

I think Tom has mentioned that pool sand has a little darker look than play sand or I do believe the sand which I use that is a fine contracters sand. The sand I use is fairly bright. 50lb bag cost apx $3.50. Heres a pic of my 55 with sand and only one 2' light in the middle.
