| You would know better than I as it's hard to tell from the pic. Quartz is one of those rocks that there ain't no mistaking what it is. |

| Yeah, not a great picture - it glows a little too much in the compact flourescent light.
Just tested it to be sure - definitely quartz. Didn't bubble, and is so hard it was VERY difficult to even scratch with a nail...
Forgot to mention that I'm building a really great rapport with the LFS I found up in Skokie. They know me by name, and the guy felt bad because the Stealth heater I bought was missing a suction cup - so when I bought replacements, he ended up giving me all the Hygro for free.
And, I like them because they have zebra loaches and fancy plecs...
Also, Happy Birthday to me

| Yeah it's nice to find a store like that. Cheap (insert bad word here) near me would never do that.
Well happy early B-day man. |

| Forgot to mention something...
The driftwood didn't come out of a "sales" tank - it came out of the LFS' own, not-for-sale discus tank - hence my thinking that it was probably safe to use as seeding material (similar to taking something from a friend's tank).
Is this logical, or should I have still boiled it? |

| Wile yes that is a much safer bet than pulling something out of their "for sale" stock tanks..There is still a level of risk.
Personally I don't allow anything from any ones tank come into my tank without being sterilized or QTed first. It boils (no pun intended) down to better safe than sorry. |

| Makes sense. Probably would be prudent for me to do the same in the future. |

Day 5
Not much to update. Checked some params today, and added Flourish Excel and Kent fertilizers again.
A question - is NovAqua (what the LFS gave me) as good as AmQuel or other water conditioners? I can't tell from the bottle whether it gets both chlorine and chloramines, or just chlorine?
Anyway, the parameters:
Ammonia 2.4 ppm
Nitrite 0.1 ppm
Nitrate <5 ppm (I'm guessing zero)
pH 7.8
KH 130 ppm
GH 120 ppm
Phosphate 0.5 ppm
I didn't feel like testing Calcium or Iron...
For tomorrow, I'm planning a big water change, then Bio-Spira/fish |

Day 6
Tonight, I'm going to get my tank as ready as possible for fish - big water change, some other assorted maintenance, lots of parameter testing, etc.
Then, perhaps tomorrow, Bio-Spira and fish |
