Soooo
I set up another 29 gal tank...I know, I'm slightly obsessed with fish.

Anyways, I'm wondering if I could get a parrot cichlid? In the tank, there is a small pleco, two little fruit tetras, and two mollies. The mollies can be moved if they have to. I have a 30 and 10 gal filter in the tank, and a heater if necessary. I also have a little cave for it to hide in.

I don't have a light/lid, though. The tank is under my other 29 gal, and I ran into the problem of the bottom tank being too close to the bottom of the other tank to fit a lid in between easily.

Also, just curious. Is there a tank size that would be equivalent in width and length to the 29, but not as tall (my 29 is 30x12x18)? Maybe a 20gal long? It is hard and time-consuming to do water changes with the 3.5 inch gap above the bottom tank.

But back to parrot cichlids. Would one be compatible with the other fish? And would it be okay without a light?

EDIT: Sorry, this should be in the general freshwater forum I think. I'll repost it there.

Help Issue with Nitrites

So I have had my tank setup for 3 months and have had high nitrite levels for the past two months that wont seem to go away with treatment suggested by my LFS and water changes. All other levels are normal and no ammonia is present in the water tests. I have java moss, wisteria, amazon swords and java ferns. Fish are two panther catfish, white convict, firemouth chiclid, spotted puffer, two chinese algae eater and one mono. I have visited 3 LFS and each tests my water says no ammonia present but high nitrites and then they sell me a product they believe will remove the nitrites but none have worked so far please help I am going nuts over this.
Oh also fish do not seem to have any issues not gasping for air at the surface which is typically a sign of high nitrites. I have only lost one fish a black convict she kept laying eggs every two weeks since I got her and just died the other day after laying a fresh batch of eggs.

I have searched on google with little luck and ebay has some driftwood but not much rock. Whats the best way to make sure these are clean just pour boiling water on them?

I have a Platy that is about 5 months old. I found it inside the canister filter as I was preparing to clean it out. I moved it to one of my 14 gallon tanks so my angelfish wouldn't be tempted to snack on it. It was tiny then, and not much bigger now, about 5 months later. It seems healthy enough, eats fine, swims around alot, but it just won't get any bigger. Is there such a thing as a runt fish? I've read that high nitrate levels can hinder a fishes growth, but I've had several fish born in that tank and they grew fine. The other Platys from that batch are normal size now. Anyone else ever have a fish that just wouldn't grow?

He said he has never replaced the Bio-wheels 2 of them just cleaned them. But the 2 filters are brand new used for about a week. How should I clean out the unit, don't think water will work alone. And should I purchase new filters or Bio-wheels or is it all ok since it was in his tank?

Also what the best way to clean out the 75 gallon tank, not very dirty.

Ok. So my tank has been running for a couple weeks now. My ammonia is about to 0. My Nitrate is a little high, but Nitrite is really high. Do I wait for the Nitrite to drop or do I need to feed it more ammonia? I think i've read a wc will drastically drop the nitrite, then I would be ready for fish?

BTW I have a 75 gal, sand substrate, a few fake plants and rocks. It's equipped with 2 whisper 30/60's. How often do I need to change the carbon and the regular filters? I think the carbon can be cleaned out a few times? PH is high too, but wont a wc help this also?

Thanks for all ur guys support. You ROCK *PEACE!*

So had one fish develop ick, tried to treat it using Jungle Ick Clear Tank Buddies tablets, which apparently i have had no success with. Over the past 3 days, ick has claimed almost all of my fish population, and the remaining ones, cept for my oto cats have ick on them. I'm still treating the tank for it with the tablets, but i'm assuming that it probably will not work and i'll have some more dead ones tomorrow or soon.

So my question is, assuming the parasite kills my entire community, how do i kill off the thing permanently (yes i know its always in the tank, but you get what i mean) and start over. *assuming the cats live through it (they look healthy) i'll move them into my 10gallon for now.

Do i raise the temp. to the highest it can be and wait for a week or two? New rocks? New artificial plants? New rootwood? i'd hate to replace everything but i will do it if necessary.
