I talked to the LFS about getting some kind of bulk magnesium product for me instead of the expensive small bottles I have been buying from the store. Well he got something for me, its in a powder form and you mix 1/2 tea spoon for every 20g of tank water. Its called Magnesion - P and the company that makes it is called Brightwell Aquatics. Good or not good, or never heard of it, lol?

i am looking for any information regarding bow fish and cow fish.
i have a black spotted bowfish (female) and want to purchase a long horned cow fish soon..

I think they should be grand together, but im am worried about the deadly sustances they let out when stressed.. or even should one die.

is this something i should worry about, ..
also should one die how long would i have to get it out of the tank before it wiped out the whole tank... just asking as i leave the house very early in the morning and return quiet late... would hate to find the whole tank dead on my return..

any info or previous experiance would be a big help
thanks

My LFS has something like this in stock except it only has one chamber. What I gathered from reading the box, you also have to buy a submersible pump to pump water thru the chamber. I am using Pura Phoslock in the tank right now, is this what I will want to buy to put in the chamber of the reactor or do I want something else. I know ya'll posted that this was an expensive product and by saying that I am guessing there is a cheaper alterative. Do I want to buy the one chambered one from the LFS or a two chambered one on line. do you run these things 24 7, someone said something at the LFS the other nite when I picked up my coral that you don't want to keep running these things when your phosphates reach zero, just want to make sure I am going to get myself in trouble. One more question, It has been suggested that I might think about putting another tank next to my sump and running a (will say this wrong) deep sand bed, they called it a RDSB, to help with my nitrates. Is this something that I might want to look into, just wondering how it works and the benefits of doing this.

LFS got a new shipment lastnite, and I wasn't really wasn't planning on buying anything as I am going to be very pickey about the SPS corals that I buy for the tank. Don't know what it is called, ya'll can help me out with that. The owner of the store was really busy, when a coral shipment comes in around here, everyone comes to the store, so it was packed and I didn't get a chance to ask him what it is. There are two pics and it is the tall catcus looking thing. They had two other corals that I liked, but like I said I am going to be really pickey.

I am about to inherit some corals (getting some LR in a few days with corals attached) and I have a ton of questions. I have a thread on transporting the LR, but figured I'd start a new thread to focus on the corals. I was planning on researching how to care for corals before getting some, and will do that asap, but since I'm getting the LR in two days I am in desperate need of some quick advice.

The guy I'll be purchasing the LR from said he is including the corals on it, namely Kenya Trees and Zooanthus. He also said some SPS grew off of the LR and that "they might come back"...not sure if that means they died off or something.

First, do I need to go buy anything to add to the water, and if so, what do you recommend? I read that you should add iodine and trace elements to the water.

Second, I figured I'd transport the LR just by wrapping it in wet newspaper, but now that I know about the corals, do they have to be in water? Is it easy to take the corals off of the LR if so? Otherwise, transport will not be as easy for me as I thought. I'd have to get some bins with sturdy lids that won't leak!

Third, what do I feed the corals? I read that zoos basically feed themselves and don't need additional food, but that the trees do need to be fed microplankton, marine snow (no idea what that is), and dissolved materials (?). What should I purchase for them?

Forth, does it matter where in my aquarium I place the trees? Can they be high up near the lights?

Fifth, how do I acclimate them? Was going to keep the LR in saltwater bins with a powerhead. Is it ok to just put that with the corals into the tank in a few days?

Thanks guys in advance! I may have more questions later.

I am going to purchase 50 lbs of live rock from a guy who is breaking down his tank. I will pick it up after work but then will have a roughly 1.5-2 hr drive home from there. I plan to bring some buckets (not sure if they have lids) with me, as well as newspaper/paper towels. I'll soak the newspaper or paper towels in the water the LR is currently in, and wrap up the LR in that. Will that be enough to ensure there isn't significant die off?

He said he will also include snails and inverts, but will they need to be bagged? Should I just bring some ziploc bags to transport them? What if they're hiding on the rock...will they survive the trip? Finally, can I just throw the LR into my tank when I get home?

Thanks!

Yesterday I started getting ready for the storm, most likely won't be much but you never know. I bought extra gas and oil for the generator and made up a bunch of RO/DI water and it got me thinking. When a storm comes thru, sometimes they tell us to boil our water before using. Will my RO/DI water unit still make water that is safe for my tank? I made enought water for two water changes and enough top off water for about two weeks.

I wanna have a DSB, but looking at my cube shaped tank, having a 4" + DSB seems like a waste of space. My 29 g sump will contain the hardware to the right, some chaeto to the left. The sump is drilled to the left with a ball valve (an old in-line return line) so i could have a secondary 5 or 10 g sump filled with sand + a separate section for the return pump. My question is..will it be enough or should i really have the DSB in the tank ?
There is this new "barebottom"-like option.. you put some GE 1500 silicon on the bottom of the tank and use a fork to create grooves..then put a small amount of sand on top and it'll glue. Then use a vaccum and take out the unglued sand particles.
Pretty neat but not good when you sell you tank ;) 'cause it's pretty permanent.
