Question Q on Marineland biowheel200

im still new and i just upgraded my 10g for a 30g and i put sand in instead of gravel and i only waited about 10 mins after i filled it to let the sand settle then i turned on my filter (marineland biowheel200) now the filters pump is loud and rattling(brand new filter) could this be from the sand grinding on the impeller or somthing like that???? ...im still running it even tho is really loud...
