Default Ich symptoms, but no white spots?

Hi,

my 6 platies have begun to exhibit new behaviour. That is, they are always scraping themselves on the plants. They don't do it very frequently, but when they do, they do it 5-6 times in a row on both sides. That's 3 times per side. My guess is that they do this about once per hour.

Ever since they've been doing this, I've been watching them very closely. They don't have any white spots on them... or anything visible on their scales that resembles white spots. However, I do notice that 2 of the tuxedo's have a bulging tummy like they've just eaten... but I haven't fed them today yet. I thought they just had constipation or something.

Anyways, my LFS recommended Clout as they thought it is some kind of parasitic infection. I read the packaging and it had a warning sticker that says it causes cancer!!! Then I also read that it contained some kind of phosphanate (sp?). Is it some form of phosphate that will cause an algae outbreak?

My last question is, will this medicine kill my plants?

BTW, my heater malfunctioned and my normal temp of about 78F went down to about 74-76F during the day and who knows how low during the night. The heater was set to max and it still didn't go above 76F. This happened for about a week. I guess this caused whatever is happening to my fish. I've since bought a better heater and raised the temp to 82F and added some aquarium salt.

My water parameters are:
Ammonia=0
Nitrite=0
Nitrate=5ppm

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

It is possible they have ich. The spots on them may not be visible to you yet, but may be growing on the fish. Keep a close eye on them, and if you do see a white spot, start treating them.

Some fish medicines do have warnings about them causing cancer. I'm not sure which ingredient it is in there. If it really worries you, choose another medicine. I think that using it in your tank for a few weeks has a fairly low chance of giving you cancer, but it's your decision.

If your temps dropped, it may have stressed the fish, which may have caused an ich outbreak. I wouldn't put the temp up high until I knew I had ich, nor add any meds until I was sure.

Usually fish will "flash" with ich. That means they kind of quickly tap the side of their body on the glass/decorations/gravel. If they are rubbing, it could be something else, possibly another parasite. Keep checking them closely. I will look and see if I can find another possiblity about what the disease is, unless someone else knows.

Check out http://www.fishyfarmacy.com/symptoms.html to see if anything there helps you diagnose.
