Default need the facts on discus

i have been thinking about getting discus for a while now and i would like to know how everybody keeps their's so i can get a good idea of whats hype and whats good practice.i am considering keeping discus in a 6 foot 84 gal.aquarium with a pleco 20 corys 2 blue rams and a small shoal of neons.i have already been considering a new home for most of my corys.water at tap is 7.8ph and is fairly hard(don't have reading no the top of my head)my local shop keeps them in tap and the discus seem fine.some have a spread of black spots on the front.like the where sprayed with spraypaint.i asked on shop owner and she said it was the cause was calcium in the water.have any of you heard this before?and help would be appreicated, thanks.

Black spots on the front caused by calcium? I think she's pulling her leg there. I keep my discus in my tap water, ph 7.6-7.8 moderately hard and no black spots. Where are you located mike? I may be able to find some breeders close by!

Your setup sounds fine except for the plecos! Some are fine with discus, some are not! Otherwise, all the other fish are fine. And a 6ft tank? Im jealous!

If you are planning to start off with tank mates and decorated tank, try to get discus at least 4" big if not bigger. Anything smaller you will need to do large daily water changes and feed quite often to get them to grow.

For grown discus, once a week may be enough however that limiting factor will be nitrates. I would not recommend nitrates above 10ppm. I prefer under 5ppm! You can do more water changes a week if you want to (never hurt) and only do 10-20% at a time.

With smaller ones though 50-60% water changes are a must and feeding of around 4 time per day for maximum growth.

Good luck,
Daniel
