about two weeks ago my black convit's had fry, this is the first time that I have had fry this was not on purpose by any means but now they are here and I have to do something about them. I need to know how long they can stay in my 55 gal tank with mom dad and about 6 other Chilids that I don't know all the names, when can I send them to new homes. I have a pet store in the area that will take some. If anyone can help me that would be great. Thank you in advance for any advise.

Congrats on the fry. If you don't have another tank to move the fry into, it's pretty doubtful that you'll have any left to send to new homes. With six other cichlids in the tank, they'll get eaten. Mom and dad may even start to eat them when they are ready to spawn again.

YES...I also have the same problem as fishermylife2. Almost the identical circumstances except i have an 80gal South Am Cichlid breeder tank set up with 3 Firemouth plus a breeding pair of Black Convicts who have just produced about 40 new Fry. I mean there is plenty of room in the 80g breeder but it is amazing 2 c those Blake Convict parents securing one hole side of the tank and keeping all the Firemouths out!!! Back corners have very tall bushy plants in each! So i hope that some of the fry will survive? Probably gonna leave them in the tank and see? Fishermyfry2 ...good question!!! How soon would they possibly spon again. Yes How often to expect this to occure? Thanks 2 all 4 the help!! jjeffrey1@comcast .net ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++

| You can expect fry again in about 3 to 4 weeks IME, also males sometimes go crazy and begin killing off the fry and sometimes even their mate, this has happened to mine a few times each time after the 3rd and 4th batch of eggs.

I have bread and raised convicts for years now and never have I had the parents eat their young. The only cichlids I have had eat their young is my Jaguars Convicts are excellent parents. Last edited by n0zqh; 12-26-2009 at 01:55 PM..
