Post Anyone with experience with german blue rams?

Check this, it outlines my experiences so far:

http://watergardens.coolnessdojo.com/breeding_rams.php

I have some questinons for the pro's:

1. What are some signs that a female may be carrying eggs?
2. Do the females have eggs all the time, or is it some kind of cycle?
3. Has anyone ever had the problem of the fish being out of sync? It seems when she is ready, he is disintersted (and vice/versa).
4. What does a ram consider a good spot to spawn> (Don't say a flower pot - i don't want to put one in my aquarium, and i'm sure they aren't bent on spawning in a pot.)

I've been doing daily or every other day mini-water changes, feeding a varied diet of fine foods (live bloodworms, blackworms; frozen bloodworms, frozen brine shrimp).

I even rearranged the aquarium to provide two choice spawning spots - one kinda sheltered by plants and one in a free swim zone. You can see a pic at the end of the page I linked.

Well, they laid the eggs last night around 8pm. That's when I took the pictures. Before work this morning, I took a peek in. Everything looks cool, the parents are taking turns fanning the eggs and whatnot.

*smacks head*

I forgot to make infusoria. Anyone know a good fast alternative?

I would not be too worried if the tank is well established, the young will not need food for a couple of days so just drop in some liquid fry food until the infusoria is cooking.
Good Luck.  smiley*

What sort of filter are you using?
If power you will have to cover the intake with fine mesh or filter foam.

Post Re: Anyone with experience with german blue rams?

It's a whisper HOB (E). It's not terribly powerful - the filter media, impeller and intake tube are all pretty clogged. I like tha reduced current. It's perfect for a peaceful little 5 gallon. But I was planning on turning it off and adding an airstone for a few days, along with small daily water changes.

Maybe i could stuff filter foam or mesh into the tube from the inside? I have some extra laying around. I'll test that.

Egg update: they are alive and well cared for. I can see two white / fungus'd eggs, but otherwise all look to be in good condition. Both parents can be seen taking turns fanning fresh water over the eggs and keeping the spawning site clear of litter. The female is espeicially obsessed with the wooden air diffuser in the tank that connects to the DIYCO2 dealio. Will she try to set the "wigglers" there after they hatch? Or perhaps they will move them around? The Rams are also busily moving gravel out of two shallow, mysterious pits near the back of the aquarium.

She's busy digging her pits.
