this is true but when you already have an algae bloom then algae is going to out compete the plants and absorb all the nutrients! you didnt read exactly what i wrote i think.

well, point is...you should never give up, especially because of algae. There is always a solution. And the last possible solution is...start over....which could be fun and a good oportunity to try some new creative aquascape or something right?

Not necessarily. I've completely eliminated hair algae, black beard algae, green water, etc. over the years by just adding some floating plants. I use the plants to 'out compete' the algae.

Any algae outbreak I've had has been eliminated without turning the lights off, cutting back on ferts, or CO2, just by adding some floaters (wisteria is great for this). Usually outbreaks happen when I've had guests over and they keep turning the lights on after the timer turns them out and feeding my fish 'extra' for me, how helpful is that ?

This probably added to your algae problems. DIY CO2 has a reputation for not being a very constant source of carbon, which can cause bad algae outbreaks, IMO. The cyano is probably due to low nitrates, that's been my case each time.

Do you have a picture of the "fuzzy diatoms"?

What plants do you have? Depending on the plants, you may not need to dose very many ferts as well.

I had Green water a little over a year ago, Its best to do big water changes if you are going to shut your lights off, because the algae (cyno) will suck the oxygen out of the water when the lights are turned off, I got rid of mine by doing 50% water changes every few days.

I have been battling cyano in one of my tanks for about 6 months now. I dose erythromycin, it goes away, I stop, it comes back. I know how you feel...
