Default its growing out of the water!

Ive got alternanthera reineckil growing out the top of my 24 inch tall tank . It iseems to be fine with doing so the stalks have thickened up which is a plus and more plants are now starting at the bottom. Do i need to trim and replant the tops in the substrate? i just leave the glass lid open under my my ten inch tall wood canopy , but my lights are only 7 inchs above the water (yeh i know they need to be closer but i have my reasons hehe).

Yes, cut the top off with sharp scissors and replant the top in the substrate.

I think it's alternanthera reineckii

I got a bit of info on wikipedia a while back. It's an awesome plant! It was growing out of the top of my 10 gallon too. I propogated and put it in the 15 gallon, and it's only got about 4 inches before it gets to the top of that one.

It's not the slow grower I thought it was

Default thanks

Thanks man. I'll try that . I put this one front and center of my 180. It really took off when it got about 14 inchs tall. My lights are a little far from the water cause i need them to be for a couple reasons . My plants seem to start going nuts when they about that height. My tank is just seven months old so im still playing with it. I've got another two lights in mind that should fit the bill for now hehe. These will be six foot ho t5s to go with my 4 48 inch ho t5s . Another 160 watts aught to help . Im sometimes a little sciddish about talking to the guys at the local club that have plants they center around just plants . Fish are'nt really there worry. so i dont always get all my info about my new plants . Do your older leaves start geting algae on them AFTER new leaves come in around them . Mine start getting new branches around the leaves thus replacing two leaves with two braches that have six leaves total . The old leaves seem to give up for the new growth . None of my other plants have algae on them its weird.
