I don't know when they will be old enough to tell the difference between male and female, but this is what I found on a fish website that I have been looking at for information: "The female has orange scales on her lower body and dorsal fins and the male is larger, less colorful, has a steeper forehead and longer fins. As it ages, the male will acquire a fatty lump on the forehead." I hope this helps.
