Aragonite is what i use, as for the depth it really depends on what you like and what fish your going to get[ like if your going to get a goby or something like that ]. In the long run the base rock becomes live so i dont think that it would matter. I used all live rock though. I think your supposed to kept the depth at either .5 inches or 3-5 inches, not to sure on that on.
