EDIT: Something 'clicked' when I was reading another BGA thread and I realized that I actually meant to refer to BBA in my response below (I never had BGA in my tanks; only BBA and green-spot/hair algae). I guess just ignore everything I wrote. Sorry.
Too bad about the algae...I feel...err, 'felt'...your pain.

Green-grayish eh?
Sounds like what I had when my BGA's growth stalled and started giving way to some green-spot/green-hair algae. As a result, the BGA on the surfaces (mostly driftwood and rocks) looked 'green-grayish' as you described.
The BGA stalled completely once I added more CO2. The green-spot/hair algae took hold once nutrient deficiencies started showing up (you know all about that situation already, lol).
All I can say is that I hope you manage to annihilate it ASAP!
