My killies spend a good portion of their time near the surface of my tank but the rest of the time they are all over. They do love floating plants but if you don't have any they will find a leaf lower in the tank to sit under. As far as insects, they will love fruit flies. When I find an ant around my house I often pick them up and drop them into the tank to get gobbled up by the first lucky killie to see it (making sure that it hasn't been exposed to any insecticides, etc obviously).
