I have Eco Complete and still use a vac. You just need to 'hover over' the substrate and suck the stuff off of it. If you get too close to the bottom, or dig it into the Eco Complete, you will start sucking up the substrate. When that happens I just put my finger over the end of the siphon-hose and let the 'gravel' fall back to the aquarium floor.
