I know what you're saying, Jeffy. How about bambo fence? You can find it online for it. Say for example, have it curved in the corner or more natural with some curveness in the curve. You can have it one size height or 2 sizes, taller in the back. Fill up each level with that substrate. Maybe you will like that?

It was on the net and I cant remember where I saw it. Kinda like the bambo stalks in several pieces together to form a fence.
