Actually, as long as everything is in sync and the plants are thriving, it's near impossible for algae to take control. But once you lose that edge, it will come, and fast. With the lighting you have, it shouldn't be too bad. Just don't do a DIY for the 55G, as you will more than likely get BBA and fast. What BBA really likes is low fluctuating CO2 levels, as well as low nitrates or high phosphates. DIY is great in small tanks, but larger ones are more prone to get BBA with DIY if it's not putting out enough CO2.
