Sounds like you are ready to buy a book! There is a pretty good one called Discus Fish by Thomas A. Giovanetti, available at most big book stores such as Barnes and Noble. It's got a great section on filtration and water chemistry (pH and Hardness) that I would recomend for any fish keeper.
